Ernesto notes:-
"Secret Agent X-9 from the early 1940's New Zealand series. This two-colour series was done by the NZ Transfer Co. in Wellington. I believe it only went to 5 issues"

Austin Briggs' brief run on X-9 is seldom reprinted. It's great to see this example. I'm struck by how much better Briggs' X-9 art was than his work on Flash Gordon. Before I saw his X-9 I'd always assumed Brigg's Flash art was crude because the artist was just starting out. However X-9, which he drew before Flash, shows an artistic maturity missing from the later strip. I know Briggs held Flash Gordon in contempt. It looks rather like he expressed that contempt by just banging the strip out rather than applying the skill and effort he put into X-9.

Please note that this was a separate publishing company to the other samples here, which are from Feature Productions-so two different series appeared in New Zealand.

To make things even more complicated, this is the Australian and New Zealand comic books section, and there's an Australian 'Secret Agent X9' comic series. Published by Atlas Publications (the company that brought us Captain Atom), the comic was called 'Secret Agent X9' for issues 1 to 9, and 'Phil Collinson Secret Agent X9' for the rest of its run (issues 10 to 31). The first 14 issues were in the horizontal (landscape) format, with the rest in the more familiar vertical (portrait) format
